Marie is a self-taught chef, beginning her foray into cooking at the young age of ten as the host of Kids’ Cooking!, a cooking show featuring kid-friendly foods. The show, which was filmed by her older brother Jim, then thirteen, was featured on Good Morning America and aired for over a decade on a local channel in Austin, Texas.
Since then, Marie’s passion for cooking has grown—while she attended the University of Texas in Austin, and later as a practicing attorney. In 2004, Marie started producing her second cooking show, It’s Easier Than You Think (later renamed Cooking With Marie). The show began on one public-access station in Austin, Texas and spread to over 90 stations around the country and in New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. As the host, Marie won several awards, including both a Silver and Bronze Telly Award.
In 2007, Marie left the full-time practice of law to focus on her true passions: cooking and entertaining, and writing about them both. She is the author of Cooking With Marie: On Any Occasion!(Bright Sky Press), released in 2008 and available at bookstores around the world. Her book won the honor of “Best First Book in the USA” by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
Marie and her recipes have been featured in numerous publications, including Food & Wine, Lucky, Southern Living, The Nest, Tribeza, and Austin Monthly magazines. Marie has been a guest on The Martha Stewart Show and The Martha Stewart Radio Show, and is a frequent guest host on a local morning news program.
Marie contributes food- and entertaining-related articles to various publications, and regularly teaches cooking classes to groups from four to 400, always focusing on relatively easy and healthy cuisine that is fitting for the home cook. She speaks to professional groups; attorneys, college, high-school, and elementary-school students; and social clubs of all ages about cooking, etiquette, entertaining, and pursuing one’s passion in life.
Marie resides in Austin with her husband, John, and their little boy, Jack, where she is working on her second cookbook.
